Training Camp (part 1)


It's that time again, time for football!  Can I get an amen?  AMEN!!!

The minute you step onto the field, your teammates know if you are ready, if you went to training camp!  You have to go to training in order to be prepared.  You have to be prepared in order to win.

Have you been winning or have you been losing?  Maybe your life has been tough.  Maybe you lost last season.  Maybe you don't want next season to look like the last season.  For that to come true, you have to go to training camp!

To go to training camp, you first have to be united with Christ.  You have to believe in Him as your Savior.

“And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:22‬ ‭

We are not fighting against each other - certainly not against your own team mates.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:10-13‬ ‭

You have to go to training camp.


“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:14-17‬ ‭

To have a helmet of salvation means you have to first have a relationship with God.

To take up the shield of faith, you have to believe the Bible is God's Word.  And you have to spend time in the Word.  Study it, memorize it, believe it, and apply it.

At Grace, we believe in and proclaim God's Word - no matter what!  We are under the authority of the truth of God's Word.

When you out you life under the authority of God's Word and practice it's principles, you will live a better life - not an easier life - a better life.

It makes you a better spouse, parent, friend, employee, neighbor, citizen, healthier, & humble.  It makes me better physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Follow Jesus + Read the Bible = Better Life

The Bible is a place, a foundation, to stand on.  It protects us and shelters us.  The question is not IF you will have hard times.  The question is what will you do WHEN you have hard times?

To make next season better than last season, you have to make the Bible part of your everyday life, You have to go to training camp!

Who's your Daddy? (part 2)

Who's your daddy?  If it is God, then you have the same power within you that raised Jesus from the dead!

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭4:4‬ ‭

What is the proof that you are a child of God and are saved?

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:13-14‬ ‭

The proof is that you life is changing. You are looking more like your daddy - God - on a daily basis.

Like father, like son.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
A chip off the old block.

If you are not becoming more like Jesus, you should be changing.  I didn't say you have stopped sinning.  I said you be in the process of changing.

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:1-2‬ ‭

The following passage should either scare the crap out of you or give you a great feeling of relief:

““Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭

Which is it for you - fear or relief?  Have you trifled to live like Him this week?  When you failed, did you feel horribly, confess your failure, and try to change?  Did you talk to Him this morning?  Did you listen to what He said?

Does any of that describe you?
Since you became a Christian, has your life changed?  How has it changed?
Is the way you love your wife and kids, would you say that you are being led by the Spirit of Christ?
Is the way you honor and respect your husband, would you say that you are being led by the Spirit of God?
Is the way that you act at work, would you say that you are being led by the Spirit of Christ?
Is the way you respond to social media, would you say that you are being led by the Spirit of Christ?
Are the things you do in private,  would you say that you are being led by the Spirit of Christ?
Are you making progress?
Do you really have a relationship with God?
Who's your daddy?

A Drop in the Ocean: God is Faithful (part 4)


Our knowledge of God is like a drop in the ocean.

As human beings we are not made to live in the stress and regret of the past.  As human beings we are not made to live in the worry  and anxiety of the future.  We were made to live in the present and in the presence of God's faithfulness.

Sometimes we just need to reset our lives, to stop, relax, and focus on the here and now.  The ocean and it's rhythms can do that: the waves in and out, the tide up and down, the sun rise and the sunset.

Life will let you down.  It sucks sometimes.  But God will NEVER let you down.

Jeremiah the prophet, said the follow as he was stepping one the rubble of his home torn down the the dean bodies of his friends and family:

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:21-23‬ ‭

First, Jeremiah DIRECTS his thoughts.  He has CONTROL OVER his emotions.

Years later, the song writer being influenced by Jeremiah's words, wrote:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever. who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭136:1-6‬ ‭

Jeremiah was blessed because he knew, by the grace of God, that he was alive.

We don't like to hear this.  We think God owes us something.  The ONLY thing God owes us is eternal punishment.  We are not entitled to anything - not even ONE MORE BREATH!

1.  God is faithful to Himself.

God never changes.  He lives up to His own standards.  He is perfectly consistent.  He lives up to His character.

“if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭2:13‬ ‭

God is faithful.

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40:28-31‬ ‭

2.  God is faithful to sinners, the lost and broken.

“in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:7-10‬

“When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭7:36-50‬

There is nothing you have done, or could ever do, that would shock Jesus.  He is faithful to sinners - the the lost and broken.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
‭‭1 John‬ ‭1:9

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:21‬ ‭

God is faithful.

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:13‬ ‭

God is faithful.

3. God is faithful to those who struggle.

“being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭

God loves you just the way you are, but He is loves you too much to leave you that way.  What God starts, He finishes.  He will refine you until you are completed.  This process can be painful - it can can be a struggle.  But rest assured, God will finish the job.

God is faithful.  He is all we need.  Not cars or houses or retirement accounts or jobs or power or friends or family or even health.  He is all we need.  God is faithful!
